The Law and Faith are Different

Galatians 3

INTRO: Looking at Galatians 3 tonight. We see Paul’s defense of the Gospel. His stand that the Gospel far outstrips the Law. In fact it replaces it.

Let’s look into the Word

Judaizers had continued to chip away at what should have been a firm faith in Christ alone - 1

Not obedient (foolish)

Luke 24:25(KJV) 25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

1 Timothy 6:9(KJV) 9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Titus 3:3(KJV) 3For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

They had seen and heard Paul’s witness of Christ crucified

Hebrews 7:25(KJV) 25Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Paul requests some answers – 2- 5

Did they receive His Spirit by works of the law or hearing with faith? (Rhetorical)

What are you thinking?

Can you live good or perfect enough?

Was it all wasted?

Were all the miracles and His Spirit’s touch from the Law or from faith? (Rhetorical)

Abraham’s faith was counted to him as righteousness - 6

As believers, we are the “children of Abraham” - 7

Even though we are gentiles or heathen we share in his faith and his blessing - 8

Spiritual Jews (or children of God) so to speak

This is the scripture that told in him all nations would be blessed

We receive the same blessing as believers as Abraham – 9

Those under the law are under a curse

Because they cannot keep it all and if they fail to keep any of it they fail in it all – 10

We are not justified by the law, but by faith – 11

The law works by obeying it (we cannot) - 12

Christ redeemed us, taking the curse of the law upon Himself - 13

Abraham’s blessing comes to us through Jesus Christ through faith – 14

God’s covenant with Abraham was better than the Mosaic Law – 15-

Abraham received a promise, as did his Seed (Christ)

The Law was not the inheritance (it was to show the people their sins)

Jesus was the inheritance, the child of promise

Moses was the mediator between the God and the people

God did not use a mediator with Abraham

The law could not give us life, thus we have Jesus Christ to believe in - 22

The Law had its place

Before Christ it was there to protect us until He came

It was a guardian or framework for us

We are no longer under it – 25

We are children of God by faith in Christ Jesus – 26

We (as baptized ) believers have put on Christ

There are no longer Jew, Greek, slave, free, male or female – but we are all one in Christ

As Christ’s we are Abraham’s seed – heirs according to the promise
