Temperance - Self-Control That Makes A Difference
INTRO: Have you ever seen someone that was, just totally out of control? Have you , you personally been that person? To be honest, we have all probably been lacking self-control or temperance at some time in our lives. And to be sure, when we are out of control we tend to be less than pretty in God's eyes or human eyes either. Today I want to continue in a series on temperance. I want to again look at David and see how his temperance affected his life and others around Him.
David, the great man of God! David, was a man after God's own heart. How could he mess up so bad? How could he lose his self-control? How did it affect his life?
Lets start.
First, before I begin, let me share some truths with you…
Today's message is not meant to be an, "I am a better dad than you or someone else."
I am not a perfect dad
Our kids do not need "perfect dads"
Our kids need good dads
Our kids need dads that love their mothers
Our kids need dads that love them
Our kids need dads that love the Lord
Our kids will follow our poor examples all too well
Our kids may follow our godly examples given enough time
Having looked at those truths, let me look at how David's lack of self-control brought heartache and sorrow into his life…
Let us read from
1 Sam 18:19-21
;19But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife. 20And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.1 Sam 18:27b-28; And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. 28And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.
1 Sam 25:40-44 40And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. 41And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. 42And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. 43David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives. 44But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
Here we see David showing Saul that So what, you take away my wife, I can find two wives!
2 Sam 2:2-4 2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite. 3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.
Here we see the former shepherd boy made king over Judah - moving up!
2 Samuel 3:1-5
1Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. 2And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; 3And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron. Now we see David so high and mighty, he has gained six wives
2 Samuel 3:14-16
14And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. 15And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish. 16And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. But David needs to save face - give me back my "wife"
2 Samuel 11:1-5
1And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. 2And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 3And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. 5And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child. So, seven wives is enough right? Wrong. You see when we start on the path of sin, it snowballs and consumes us
2 Samuel 11:26-2726And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. 27And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
We are up to eight - how will that affect his kids?
1 Kings 11:1-4
1But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 2Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 3And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 4For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. And his grandkids
2 Chronicles 11:17-23
17So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon. 18And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse; 19Which bare him children; Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham. 20And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; which bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith. 21And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and threescore daughters.) 22And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king. 23And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.Truths:
Sin hurts us - it consumes
Sin grows in our own lives - it progresses
Sin grows in the lives of our loved ones
Sin is nurtured by our example to our loved ones
Sin hurts our loved ones

What kind of example are you living for your family today?
What are the costs involved for your mistakes?
What can you do about all the sin in your life?
The truth about sin in our lives
On our own, it does not go away
It is costly, very costly
It is so costly, we can hardly handle it - we can't
God devised a plan to handle sin
Jesus was born as God's only Son
Jesus died for our sins - if we trust in Him
Jesus is our sacrifice for our sins
If we ask him to forgive us, he will
We can have victory over our sins
We can have victory with the Lord
Would you like to ask God for forgiveness this day?
He is willing to listen
