When Does Saying "Uncle" Help Us "Win?"

INTRO: Two weeks ago, I looked at Onesimus. How he as a slave had been named Useful. How he had ran away and become Useless or Worthless. Onesimus was saved under Paul's ministry and helped Paul during his house arrest in Rome. Paul sent him back to his master, Philemon, and wrote a moving letter to Philemon on Onesimus' behalf. The thrust of the message was that God can take someone that is useless and make him or her useful, PRAISE BE TO GOD!

Last week, I used as a thought, When Is Letting Go Grabbing Hold? The idea was, we need to let go of the sins and weights that so easily beset us. Only by letting go of the world can we be the servant the Savior wants us to be in life.

Today, I have three different people I want to look at in the scriptures: a Rich Young Ruler, Nicodemas, and Zachaeus. Two were extremely religious, and the other not so much. I have entitled the message, "When Does Saying 'Uncle' Help Us 'Win'?" -

Anyone ever get into it ad someone got the best of you and would not let go until you said "uncle?" This is what this is about, knowing when to say, "uUncle."

Lets start!

Turn in your Bibles to…

Mark 10:13 - 31 13And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. 17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 27And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

28Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. 29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. 31But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

The first thing that strikes me in this scripture is how Jesus' idea of being saved or what is needed to be saved, tends to be much different than organized religion.

We can see in verses 13-15…

We need to "cry Uncle" (when it comes to salvation) just as a little child

Announce our helplessness

Admit our failures

Ask for forgiveness - relate how a child does not want to hurt mom's feelings

Accept His help or answer

We can then see in verses 17-31…

We need to "cry Uncle" (when it comes to self-righteousness) just as a terrible sinner

Let go of our works

Look for more than just laws and rules

Latch onto what He offers

Leave behind our own sacrifices as a cure - 28-31

Let us move on to another scripture…

John 3:1 - 21 1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 9Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God

In this scripture, we can see…

We need to "cry Uncle" (when it comes to seeking Him) just as a clueless sinner

Altered (spiritual rebirth) state is needed

Assessing Jesus is rewarding

Accepting God's Son is the answer

Abandoning God's plan is destructive

Last let us turn to …

Luke 19:1 - 10 1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. 3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. 4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. 6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. 7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. 8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

In this scripture, we can see…

We need to "cry Uncle" (when it comes to seeing Him) just as a helpless sinner

Ample chance to see Him in our lives

Availability for all of us to know Him

Answers to our needs is found in Him

Agreement to follow Him is found in us

Now, I am not saying that the Lord has us in a headlock and is twisting our ears to get us to say, "Uncle." Actually it is just the opposite -- He is lovingly using His Spirit to speak to our hearts to draw and show us our need for Him and the answers He brings.

I am saying, we must effectively give up and say, "Uncle" if you would and give up.

He has the answer

He knows the answer

He tells us the answer

He is the answer.

Calling upon Him, calling "Uncle" is not losing, but winning.

When we call "Uncle" to Him, we win, not lose.
