Can We Be Thankful or Show our Appreciation Without Being Selfish?

INTRO: Today, I want to look towards THANKSGIVING DAY. I want to talk about being thankful. There is a need to be thankful. God likes it when we are thankful. We are better for being thankful. As you can tell from the title, I want to deal with the need for not being self-centered when we deal with our giving of thanks.

Colossians 1:12 - 29 12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; 24Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church: 25Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Colossians 3:12 - 17 12Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Right or wrong (and I am not saying being thankful for these are wrong)…

We tend to quickly be thankful for…

Posterity, Parents (more as we get older), Peers and family -

Lets face it family and friends are important to us

Am I the only one thankful for my family, my friends, my church

Personal health

More and more every day I am thankful of the health I have

(and wishful of what I used to have)

Even some of these are selfish

Personal wealth or belongings (not just great)

Some seek great fortune

Others are happy with small fortunes

Others are never happy

Some desire only to be comfortable

Others only to not struggle

Prestige, position and power

Some are thankful for the place in life they hold

Want to have the things power and position brings to them

However, some of these can be tied to our own selfishness.

There are other things we can be thankful for…As we can see in His Word…

God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit 1:12-29

We can be thankful for…

His willingness to give Himself for us

His nature to love us

His nature to give self

His nature to provide for us - aware of our need

We can also be thankful for…

Salvation through Him

Cost paid in full

Cost was payable

Cost is priceless

Cost is (still) precious (some things fade with time or even shortly)

Let me share an illustration…

Unable To Pay

There was once a benevolent medical doctor who would often check his books for debts that had NOT been paid. Sometimes he would place a RED mark through those debts and write: "Forgiven, unable to pay." The patient was released from the debt, and the doctor absorbed the loss himself.

Now it happened that the good doctor died, and his widow tried to collect those debts that were STILL outstanding. Appearing before a judge, the widow was asked if she had any proof of the debts. She replied, "Yes, I do." Then she handed the doctor’s books to the judge.

Seeing the RED marks through the unpaid amounts, the judge asked the widow if the writing was that of her husband. When she responded affirmatively, the judge said, "Then no court in the world would give you a judgment against THESE people when your husband, with his own pen, has written, ‘Forgiven, unable to pay."

You and I have a tremendous debt that we owe! It is the debt of SIN (cp. Matthew 6:12). The debt is SO GREAT that there is NO way that you or I can repay that debt. We could NEVER do enough work to pay off the debt. Our salvation (or redemption) is "not of works lest any one should boast" (Ephesians 2:9).

However, the GOOD NEWS is that when we obey the Gospel, Jesus Christ, with His own BLOOD, writes upon the record of our debt: "Forgiven: unable to pay." [Living Water Archive]

In the words of a beloved song, He Paid a Debt:

He paid a debt he did not owe,

I owed a debt I could not pay.

I needed someone to wash my sins away.

And now I sing a brand new song,

"Amazing Grace" all day long,

Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

He paid a debt at Calvary,

He cleansed my soul and made me free,

I'm glad that Jesus did all my sins erase;

I now can sing a brand new song,

"Amazing Grace" all day long,

Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

One day He's coming back for me

To live with Him eternally,

Won't it be glory to see Him on that day!

I then will sing a brand new song,

"Amazing Grace" all day long,

Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

And we can be thankful for…

Unity

Psalm 133

1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

At home

At work

At church

With God

Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

And, last, we can be thankful for…

Love

Helps to..

Prevent disunity

Prepare our hearts to know God - it is from God - God is love

Point to God

Predict the greatness of heaven

Provide a glimpse of God

Present His gift to us

Love is a

Precious gift most of all

Love…

Passes on to our children and others if we will share the Love Of God with them

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity[love].
