The Casualties Of Sin

First, I want to look at what sin is…

Sin is disobedience towards God

Sin is dishonoring God

Sin distances us from God

We can see this in Adam, Eve, and Cain's lives.

Sin is more than just 10 commandments…

Vain talk - Pro 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

Contempt for others - Pro 14:21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.

Foolish thoughts - Pro 24:9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

Unbelief - Rom 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Neglect of opportunity - James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Transgression of the Law - 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

All unrighteousness - 1 John 5:17 (regardless if we think it is sin) All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

Second, I want to look at the pretense of sin…

Sin is deceitful - 1 Tim 2:14; 2 Tim 3:13; Titus 3:3

(1 Tim 2:14) And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

(2 Tim 3:13) But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

(Titus 3:3) For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

Sin is disappointing - Is. 17:11 In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

Sin's penalty may be delayed - Lu.13:7-9

7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Again we see this in Adam, Eve, and Cain's lives.

Third, I want to look at some effects of sin…

Pro 8:36; But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Sin demands more attention (increases the desire for more sin - becomes a way of life) - Ps. 52:3(Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

Sin dirties or "dingies" our lives

Sin drains our enthusiasm

Sin decreases our joy in life - suicides often the result

Sin destroys relationships

Sin delivers us into Satan's hands

Sin denies us the power God wants in our lives

I hope to continue this next week, but before I stop I want to look at one verse…

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

There is hope!
