How Does Friendships Help Strengthen New Beginnings Church?

INTRO: With the exception of last week's singing, I have been preaching the last several weeks about things that help make a church strong, lasting and effective for the Lord. I talked about how important prayer was the first week; In that we looked at our talking with God. The second week I talked about the blessings of obedience, which is our doing the things of God. Then, I dealt with our need to have strong, healthy loving homes. Thus, teaching our children about God. Last week, I looked at worshipping God, we saw the blessings of praising and honoring God in our lives. That is praising God. Then I dealt with commitment in our lives. This is giving God what is His to have from our lives. Today I want to look at how good strong, vibrant friendships will help strengthen our church.

What is a friend? Webster's New World Dictionary tells us it is, "1. A person whom one knows well and is fond of; close acquaintance. 2. A person on the same side in a struggle; ally: opposed to foe. 3. A supporter or sympathizer: as a friend of labor."

One can tell that friends are important. They mean more to some people than to others. To some friends are closer than family.

Before I start this morning, I want o look at some terms we use with friends:

Longtime friend

Childhood friend

Friend from school

Friend from work

Friend from church

Just friends

Secret friends

Casual friends

Lifetime friends

Close friends

Best friends

Fair-weather friends

New friend

Old friend

True (blue) friend

And sadly there are…

False friends

And…

Ex-friends

We think of many, many different people when we think of friends. Some

Are friends important in our lives? Do we need friends? Do friends matter? I think we all know the answers to these are yes.

Suicide, the ninth leading cause of death in our country is often the result of loneliness in life. People feeling like no one really cares or loves them.

I read a while back that we only have on average about 4 or 5 really close friends in a lifetime. Doesn't that seem too small? Why would it be so small? Because we do not work to culture friendships.

Okay, I need to get into the message this morning. How Does Friendships Help Strengthen New Beginnings Church?

Friendships help to strengthen New Beginnings when we have friendships that…

Help each other

By guiding each other through problems in life

Ex 18:13-20 13And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. 14And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? 15And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God: 16When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws. 17And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. 18Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. 19Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: 20And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

We can help by listening

We can help by letting them share their feelings

We can help by helping them see their problems

We can help by letting them see their inner self

By motivating each other to excel

1 Samuel 18:1-4 1And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

2And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.

3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

Friends reflect what we want to be in life

Friends are dedicated to something larger than themselves

Friends can help change our life's direction

By teaching each other the way of the Lord

1 Timothy 4:11-16 11These things command and teach.

12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Teach facts

Model changes they make

Instill skills

By coaching (coaxing?) each other to greatness

Ruth 3:1-5 1Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

2And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.

3Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

4And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

5And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

When we have friendships that…

Mirror the love of Christ

Show His life changing sacrifice (for us)

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Show His life beginning forgiveness

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Show His life-filling love

John 15:13-15 13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Show his life building blessings we know

Mark 10:16 16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Peace, joy, and happiness

Show His lifetime commitment to (or for) us and them

Heb. 13:5b … I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

What kind of friend are we?

Do we help each other?

Are we friendly? Proverbs 18:24 tells us… 24A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Do we stick closer than a brother as the verse tells us?

Do we mirror Christ in our life and attitudes towards our friends?
