Old Times At New Beginnings Church
Part 1 - Old Timers Are Good Timers
Prov 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
INTRO: Today we start a theme for the month of October. I want to use this time to recognize our fantastic seniors that are part of our fellowship and affirm the strength of time proven service of the Lord along the "Old Ways."
Today, I want to spend time looking at our "Old Timers." I want to look at why they are so special to us, both individually and corporately as a church or body of believers.
The truly are good timers not just old timers!
Eph 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
When I think of our Old Timers I think of many things they bring to our lives…
They are…
Laborers - Eph. 4:28
Honest
Hard working
Happy (when doing so - useful)
Helpful
2 Cor 6:6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
They are…
Longsuffering - 2 Cor. 6:6
Patient
Paternal
Plastic - flexible (believe it or not (have to be in this day and age)
Personal (understanding)
Job 17:9 The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
They are…
Lasting - Job 17:9
Like…
Fixtures (many are there all the time)
Fair (beautiful people)
Fine gold and gifts (a treasure)
Favor from God
2 Cor 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
And because they are such laborers, so longsuffering, and are lasting, they have become our…
Leaders - 2 Cor. 4:5
Demeanor for God - heart yearns to do right
Decency in front of God - integrity to do what is right
Determination to serve God - make sure they do right
Devotion for each other
Prov 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
1 Cor 13:4-8 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
They are also someone we can…
Love - 1 Cor. 13:4-8
Loveable
Sacrifice
Care
Prov 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
And someone we can…
Like - Pro. 17:17
Likable
More than just loving a relative
More than blind acceptance
More than surface relationships
Psa 119:63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.
John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Also someone we can…
Lean on - John 13:23; Ps. 119:63
"Leanable" (wants to support others)
Strong
There
John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
And they should be someone we can…

Laughable
Understanding
2 Tim 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
And certainly someone we can…
Learn from - 2 Tim 1:5
Good things
Bad things
Godly things
Worldly things
Prov 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
We also know they are also someone who will be…
Lifting us up in life
Cheering us on
Building us up
Standing by our side
Acts 20:35 I have showed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
2 Cor 9:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
They will be someone who will be…
Liberal with us (giving) - 2 Cor. 9:6; Acts 20:35
Sacrificing themselves - time, money, resources, etc.
Helping us out
Prov 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Certainly they need to be someone who will be…
Limiting us (Godly teaching) - train up a child…
Point out harmful barriers
Provide loving correction
Pull us back (reach out for us)
1 Sam 1:27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
More than all the others they will be someone who will be…
Looking out for us (prayer) - Acts 2:42; 1 Sam 1:27
They pray
They cry
They call (out to us)
They pray some more
