The Call For Gideon
Judges 6-8
Gideon is one of the great stories in the Bible. An everyday man just doing his job was moved on by Gods Spirit to rescue His people. He was not perfect. He had doubts. He even tested God (sop to speak). He did however do what God sent him to do.
How many like myself have, "fleeced" God for an answer?
We can see the
Condition of Israel [parallel to U.S. condition]
Sinned against God 6:1
Bound by sinful living vs.1
Hindered by sinful practices and alliances vs. 2-5
Discouraged by their plight - vs. 6
Humiliated by their subjection vs. 2-6
Ready to call upon the Lord vs. 7
It is at this time, we can see the
Convincing of Gideon (and Israel they were convinced too)
Poverty 6:6
Message given through His prophet 6:8 - 10
Challenge given (but not lived up to) vs. 10
Angel sent to Gideon vs. 11,12
Gideon singled out vs. 12-14
Gideon confirmed vs. 16-22
Gideon acknowledges gods call vs. 22-24
I want to take time and look at some
Characteristics of Gideon
Busy 6:11
Brave vs. 12
Known by God vs. 12
Humble vs. 15
Worshipper vs. 17-19,24
Obedient vs. 20: "And he did so "
Stood with God vs. 25-27
Last we need to see the
Challenge before Gideon
Be humble 6:15
Live up to his name (not coast) 6:32
Follow the Spirit vs. 34
Totally trust God 7:1-8
Lead by example 7:17 "As I do, so shall ye do "
Drive out the enemy 7:19-24
Had to call others to action 7:24
Remain modest in times of great success 8:1-3
[Maybe look at their actual battle and parallel that to a godly life. idea for another message?]
Pitcher with a lamp and trumpet
God was their sword
They stood firm
They called upon God
He fought their batttles
