Rescue Operations
Luke 15:4-7; 1 Peter 5:5-10
Luke 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
INTRO: Last week I dealt with "friendly fire." This is always sad to see happen in our lives. Today, I want to deal with a subject that brings us great joy. That is seeing our captured soldiers being rescued from the hands of the enemy oppressors.
Who among us could not help but be excited and thrilled about the wonderful rescue that happened this past week with Pfc. Jessica Lynch of Palestine WV? The fact that she was snatched from the clutches of the enemy causes us to have great delight. I then praised the Lord and still lift my voice in praise for this. How can we rejoice enough? Yet there is sadness because her companions were not so fortunate.
I am reminded of the scripture just read from Luke 15 and how it parallels to this time. As we celebrate across America along with her family, for her rescue, we should understand that God also celebrates when one of His loved ones is rescued from captivity. There is great rejoicing in His kingdom for each soul saved.
We can also see much of the danger involved for our lost loved ones as they face the danger of the devil. Let us read…
1 Pet. 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
Matt. 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Let us begin, first, I want us to see…
The sad fact of lost souls
Just as war brings devastation, when we look at the war for souls, we find…
Many lost
Many "separated from their unit"
Many wounded and maimed
Many held captive (by Satan and sin)
Many defeated (eight other soldiers were lost)
Having understood the sad fact of the spiritual war we face, we can also see…
The dire straits they are in
They are…
Headed for destruction - eternally separated from God and all of His
Little value to the enemy - he has selfish plans
Dependent upon the enemy (and his lies)
Helpless to save themselves
We must also remember…
The rescue that can be made
We must always recall…
He knows where we are
He has planned for our rescue
We are important to Him
He can rescue us
And, last…
Understand our part
We must…
Admit our need for rescue
Believe He will rescue us
Claim the rescue
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
So, to be rescued or saved or receive salvation or be born again, we must…
Ask the Lord to save us
Believe He is the Christ and that He can save us
Confess Him as our Lord and Savior
Do you want to be saved? Or rescued?
Are you tired of captivity or the bondage of sin?
Do you want to return home to those that love you?
Will you refuse His helping hand today?
Will you put off your rescue?
