Facing The Colossal Challenge Of Children
Deu. 4:9: 31:13; Pro. 22:6

How did Jesus feel about children?????

Did He feel bothered by them????

Did He tell His disciples to, "Get rid of them?"

Did He have time for them?

Were they important in His plans?

Did He include them in His plans and kingdom?

Are they important to you?

Should they be important to our church?

Matt. 19: 13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

Deu 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

Deu 31:13 And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

Prov 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

INTRO: Raising children is a challenge! I think it is one thing that has increased in difficulty over the years. No I am not talking about all of the physical things. Many of them have become a little easier compared to yesteryear. Yes pin-less diapers have to be easier on the fingers (oh yeah and the baby for us men). Gerber baby food surely beats special cooking requirements. Baby wipes, improved clothing, toys that challenge, etc. – and that is what I remember from the time my boys were small. Things continue to improve.

But we all know there is a great deal more involved than just the physical areas of a child’s life. The one I want us to consider today is the spiritual aspect.

First we can see the…
Seriousness of being entrusted with a living soul to nurture

They are being formed through efforts of ours and the things we allow to surround them. We only get one go around with each one. Should our prayer be, "Help me O Lord do the best by this child of yours, this child you have entrusted me with, this child that I love and want to have what You so freely offer?"

When we look at our children, we see they are…

God’s creation

No matter what the pro-choice people say…
God has watched over all of you today and allowed you to enter this world

We are His workmanship- all of us

God’s ransomed beings

God knew the future need
God met the need

God’s special projects

He loves them
He wants to reach them
He has us to help

God’s sponges

They should soak up…
His love (remember God is Love)

His Word
His way
Our example
Our guidance

Matt. 18:1-14 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?
13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

Not only can we see the seriousness of being entrusted with a living soul to nurture, we can have great…

Satisfaction in pointing precious souls to His Kingdom

Worldly accomplishments pale in comparison to heavenly "placements"

2 Tim 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

We set in motion a continuing saga

Like seeds growing
Like flowers blooming

We help win the battle against Satan

His desire is to take our kids
His desire is to hide the Love God has
His desire is to twist God’s Word

I would like to play a recording of Chonda Pierce. I believe you will truly enjoy it. I feel it fits in with our message today. Let us listen…

You may have an Anna on your hands (or in this case an Allie)

When we look at raising children, we not only see the seriousness of being entrusted with a living soul to nurture, and the satisfaction in pointing precious souls to His Kingdom, we see the need for…
Strength of marital support

Raising children is a tiresome undertaking – but worthwhile
Raising children is a team function – it takes two
Raising children is a treasure given by God Himself – they truly are God’s blessings

And I also want to look at children’s…
Standing in the church

We need to seek them out as Christ did
We need to welcome them as Christ did
We need to teach them as Christ did
We need to love them as Christ did

When we do this we are obeying Him and building the Kingdom Of God.
