What Does It Take To Ready Our Nets
Matt. 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11
Matt. 4:18-22 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 19And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. 21And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. 22And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
Luke 5:1-11 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
[Discuss net fishing and some of the things about it]
INTRO: Are your "nets" ready for the Lord's use? If He sends a blessing your way can you catch it or would your nets be rotten or full of holes? He needs good faithful fishers of men to catch the great catch He has needing catching!
Before I start, I want you to note the goal that Christ gave us in verse 19 of Matthew 4. H e wants us to "follow Him and become fishers of men." People often say they do not know what the Lord wants from their life. This was not so here, He plainly told some of the disciples what His plan was. His plan remains in effect for our lives today. He wants you to be part of His team. Forget all the excuses, and forget all the self-made plans in your life. He is ready for you to help in the catch.
Let us get started. In order to be ready to use our "nets" we need to…
Mend our nets
Often, like our nets we feel broken, insufficient, or unworthy.
Our lives either through misuse or neglect have become damaged and we need to mend our nets.
How do we mend our nets?
Like the disciples, we need to…
Know Jesus
Eph. 3:19-21 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
The church is not buildings but the believers
And…
Trust Jesus
2 Cor 3:4-5 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: 5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
And like He wishes…
Follow Jesus
We can see that in order to be ready to use our "nets" we need to…
Wash our nets
Our nets need attention. If they are not treated properly fishing nets will rot, they will break and become ineffective, they will become entangled and difficult to use, and they will have so much junk trapped in them they hard to use (because of their weight) and are ineffective when it comes to catching the available catch.
We need to wash our nets of things not needed and…
Wash away harmful denials (Of God's will and desires in our lives)
What do we deny by our actions?
His love in our lives
His strength for our lives - to help us wash away our "I cannots"
His purpose with our lives - He wants us to follow
We need to wash our nets of things not needed and…
Wash away selfish attitudes (that weaken our service and abilities to use the "net" He gives us.)
How do we weaken our service?
When we fail to worship Him
When we have little or no time for God in our lives
When we worry more about our nets instead of His nets
What are you telling the Lord when you say I do not have time for you? If the disciples told him they would give him a tenth of their time, would that have worked?
Is the Lord happy with how you are handling His nets that He has entrusted you with??????
And…
Wash away sinful practices (weight us down)
We let sin permeate our lives little by little (often secret sins)
We cling to sin (enjoyable) but enjoyment should not be the decider, is it pleasing to God?
We practice sin in front of our children and others - they see all!
To use the nets, we must get ready to…
Launch out a little
When we do this (launch out a little) we can…
Listen to Jesus - be obedient
Learn from Jesus - His guidance
Labor for Jesus - experience service
I feel safe in saying, If you are not launching out a little, you are out of the will of God. If you are not listening, learning, and laboring for the Lord…
Your nets are rotten
Your nets are clogged
Your nets are useless
However, to really use the "nets" to our best abilities, we must be willing to…
Launch out to the deep and let down our nets
Even when weary - How many of you find time to do all sorts of things that please you, but cannot find any time for His work
Even when you've tried your best - Luke 5:5
Even when we cannot handle the burden (blessings)
(He will have others help us) What if God sent 100 people on us next Sunday, or even in a month, could we pull in the nets? He will help us out.
Which brings me to the last point…
We should know that there are…
Great blessings involving our readiness to use our "nets"
They involve…
Personal blessings (To know Him & His Rescue Plan) - to see God's blessings
Others' blessings (They need help to reap "the harvest")
Boundless blessings (blessings beyond measure - how do you place a cost on a lost soul? How do you measure the advantage in reaching a loved one for Christ?)
