What Does It Take For Us To Be A Peculiar Church?

1 Pet 2:9

9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

peripoieôsis

per-ee-poy'-ay-sis

From G4046; acquisition (the act or the thing); by extension preservation:
obtain (-ing), peculiar, purchased, possession, saving.

INTRO: Few people like to be odd, weird or peculiar. But the Word tells us here that we are to be peculiar. That means we are to be special. Something worth having. That is how the Lord feels about us, we are worth having, we are worth His life in fact! We are worth saving !

I want to look today about What Does It Take For Us To Be A Peculiar Church? or people? What does it take to be special for the Lord? What do we need to do here with our lives to be that peculiar or specially acquired individual that the Lord can be so happy to come for some day? Before I get started, do you see the special words in this verse?

Look at this again…

9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

We are to be allowed to show forth the praises of Him! He has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light! WOW!

Let us get started. Again, I ask, What Does It Take For Us To Be A Peculiar Church?

First and foremost, we need…
Christ in our lives

We need to have a…
Constant faith in Him

He was the Christ

He died for our sins

He is coming again

He is still in control

We need a…
Careful eye upon Him

In Him our trust must be

In His footsteps we should walk

In His pathways we can run

(use a lineman in football helping the running back as Him opening the way for us)

With our eyes upon Him, we can more easily have a…
Confirming guidance from Him

His Spirit bears witness with our spirit

His Word directs our steps

He prods our conscious towards obedient actions

Second we need to have…
Consensus in the body

We need to all look toward the Holy One

We need to all follow after the Caring One

We need to all call upon the Saving One

Not only, do we need to all focus upon Christ, we also need to…

Look to each other for bountiful backing

Look to each other for sound support

Look to each other for encouraging exhortations

Romans 12:5
5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

1 Peter 3:8
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Galatians 3:28
28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:27
27Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Colossians 2:2
2That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

2 Corinthians 13:11
11Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

Last, we need…
Charity in our hearts and souls

1 Corinthians 13
1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

We must understand that the work here for charity is agapeô. The Greek word for dear love. So we understand every time we hear charity today, it means love.

We need…
Charity (love) that shows

1 Timothy 1:5
5Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

1 Corinthians 13:1-3
1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

 Charity (love) that "glows"

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

 Charity (love) that grows

 1 Peter 5:14
14Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

2 Peter 1:5-10
5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

1 Peter 4:8
8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
