19Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution
that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch,
preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20And some
of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch,
spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21And the
hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned
unto the Lord. 22Then tidings of these things came unto the
ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas,
that he should go as far as Antioch. 23Who, when he came, and
had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose
of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24For he was a good
man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added
unto the Lord. 25Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek
Saul: 26And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch.
And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the
church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians
first in Antioch.
Intro: So many times we approach REVIVAL with a cavalier attitude.
A so-so approach that puts minimal importance upon obtaining revival in
our souls and throughout our church. Yes, yes, yes, we all know how to
have revival. We have heard it time after time. Pray, read the Bible, attend
the revival services.
I ask you, do you do that? Knowing is not enough
to guarantee we receive revival. We must have more than "knowing" in our
hearts. We must make the effort.
This morning I want to look at not only what helps
bring revival, but what revival does for us in the process. We can have
revival, YES!!! We can ALSO receive the blessings it brings.
A. A burning desire for the deliverance of a "Revival
Spirit" Ps. 51:12-13
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted
unto thee.
B. Sincere prayer and personal communication with God Eph. 6:18; Phil. 1:4-6; 1:19-20; Col. 4:1-4
Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Phil 1:4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with
joy,
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good
work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Phil 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your
prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing
I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also
Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Col 4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal;
knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of
utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
C. Observance and obedience to His Word Heb. 4:12; Ro. 10:8-17
Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth,
and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt
be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the
mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the
same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how
shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and
bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord,
who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than
any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit,
and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart.
D. Removal of sinful and hurtful practices in our lives 2 Chr. 19:3; 2 Ki. 23:4
2 Ki 23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.
2 Chr 19:3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that
thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine
heart to seek God.
Hab 3:2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
85:6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
Ezek 18:21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which
was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far
as Antioch.
23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and
exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the
Lord.
24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith:
and much people was added unto the Lord.
25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came
to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and
taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the
Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which
came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined
to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas
and Saul.
