What Happened When David
Went To The Brook?
1 Sam. 17
INTRO: We hear so much of the story in our society
about David and Goliath. The big guy against the little one. The hopeless
that overcomes. But David had a lot going for him, as we will see, because
he served a BIG GOD! So was this a great miracle, or was it God working
through a willing servant?
We see some observations from
the fight against Goliath…
-
We will always face our "Goliaths" in life - vs. 1-11
-
There are always those that blindly follow out of habit
vs. 13 - 14
-
We can always be helpful to those involved in the Lord's
work Vs. 17- 22
-
God can always supply a means, if we will go to the
"brook." Vs. 40
What did David carry down
to the brook?
-
His stand against evil (versus - gliding along with
the crowd)
-
His willingness to step forward (versus sitting back
in the crowd)
-
His willingness to stand against opposition - vs. 28,
33
-
His willingness to continue in the ways God had been
blessing - vs. 34 - 37
-
His trust in God's ways and not man's means - vs. 39
What did David carry away
from the brook?
-
Youthful exuberance (versus stale maturity)
-
Complete trust in the Lord (versus skeptical experience)
-
A willing vessel or arm (versus a dutiful servant)
-
A difficult, but doable job (versus one impossible
in man's eyes)
When David met Goliath, God…
-
Saw the boy, others and the need
-
Sharpened his vision and understanding - vs. 38-40
-
Supplied the stones
-
Stiffened his backbone - vs. 43-44
-
Strengthened His arm use ILL. 62
-
Steadied his aim
CONCLUSION: A miracle? Certainly. But It was because
David not only...
Wanted to do what was right,
Wanted to let God work
Wanted to win the battle
….But let God work through him!
