Are We Really At Risk?
Luke 12:13-21

INTRO: JFK Jr. has very possibly lost his life this past day. We are sad, no doubt, and feel very sorry for a family that has seen a great deal of sadness. But life goes on! Death happens! The main question that arises is…"Are you ready to meet the maker?" Let us deal with a few things about death and life this morning.

(Luke 12:13) And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

  1. Life is at the very least, fragile

  2. (1 Chr 29:15 KJV) For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
(James 4:14 KJV) Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

    1. Life is but a few days
    2. Ultimately as to death we have little or no control - even when we are driving

  3. Life's goals can be, and often are fleeting

  4. (Job 7:6 KJV) My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

    1. Rich man faced death before his expansions.
    2. Rich man was a fool

  5. Life can and should be - a foretaste (of better things to come)
    1. In Christ
    2. Loss of all our problems, and heartaches

  6. Death can and should begin an eternal fellowship

  7. Josh 23: 14 And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
15 Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
16 When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

    1. With The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
    2. With His followers

Conclusion: Are you at risk? For death sure! For eternal life with the Lord?

Only you can know that! Have you trusted Him as your Savior? Have you repented of your sins? Have you walked away from that old life of ugliness and sinful existence?
